Revision Rhinoplasty – What Is It?
The sole purpose of revision rhinoplasty is to correct problems seen after initial rhinoplasty. This happens when client request a certain type of job but are not completely pleased with the results and so want a “touch up” so to speak. So essentially, this technique is used to repair a bad nose job.
Risks and Complications of Revision Rhinoplasty
Revision rhinoplasty is not as simple as it seems, just fixing somebody else’s mistake. There are risks involved that should be weighed before deciding to go ahead with the surgery. These risks and complications include:
• Tiny red spots or general redness – this is due to bursting blood vessels and although very rare, this may never go away if you are one of the few that experience it.
• Healing may cause scar tissue to form which makes a whistling sound when you inhale or exhale.
• Scarring – no matter how skilled your surgeon is there is no real way to know if you will scar or not or what the extent of the scar will be. When incisions are made on the inside scarring is minimal but otherwise it can be quite obvious and will take a long time to disappear if it ever does.
• Some patients will have swollen noses for up to a year.
• You may lose your sense of smell temporarily.
Choosing a Surgeon; What to look for to Ensure you are Making the Best Choice
For your revision rhinoplasty you may not want to use the surgeon that had performed on you previously. When in search for a surgeon here is what you should look for;
• Board Certification – this is granted by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS). This ensures you that your chose surgeon has done a residency after finishing medical school and has at least one prior certification in facial specialty from the Medical Specialties or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. Also that he has experience in excess of two years and has done over 100 facial plastic surgeries in his career. You will see that this certification enables you to get a top of the class surgeon who has to pass all these requirements in order to be certified by the ABFPRS.
• He should hold proper license which is dependent on the state that the practice is in. Proper license ensures you that the surgeon follows a code of ethics as are stipulated by his license.
Revision rhinoplasty is the correction of a prior nose job. Like any other surgery this should not be taken lightly. One should measure and weigh the risks and complications to the magnitude of the defect they see in their nose. If you decide that this technique is the best for you then you need to ensure that you find a surgeon who is certified by the ABRPRS and has a proper license for the state in which he operates in. this will minimize the chances of your needing yet another revision Rhinoplasty.
