Deviated Septum Rhinoplasty: Not Only For Aesthetic Purposes

Ever wondered how your nose will look like if you have a deviated septum? If your nasal septum is displaced to one side, one nasal opening will be smaller than the other. If this condition is severe, one side of your nostrils could be blocked causing reduced airflow. You would then experience difficulty in breathing, nosebleeds and even nasal infection.

This condition may be congenital and most often a result of injury. The effects of a deviated septum such as breathing difficulties can be managed by medications however to fully correct the deviated septum, a surgical procedure is advised.

Deviated septum rhinoplasty can be done to modify your deviated septum. It can change the shape of your nose as well as contour your nostrils. It is also performed to reduce the size of your nose. It is done mainly to reshape your nose. Before undergoing this procedure, your surgeon will examine your facial features. You should take note that the upper portion of your nose is bone and cartilages make up the lower portion. Bone and cartilages can be modified by rhinoplasty.

Your doctor will tell you about the possible effects of undergoing this type of surgery such as pain and swelling. You can also experience persistent nosebleeds and numbness around your nose. Bruising can be experienced as well. This is not a sign of possible complication from the nose surgery. It usually appears 10 days after the surgery. These will all depend on what part of your nose will be modified by your surgeon.

Twenty-four hours after the surgery, you are advised to stay in bed with your head elevated. Medications will be given by your doctor to alleviate pain. Cold compress or ice packs can be placed on your nose to reduce swelling. You are recommended to refrain from blowing your nose for almost a week. You are not allowed to bend over with your head lower than your heart. This is to prevent too much bleeding.
Do not worry that you will not be able to go to work for a long time after a nose surgery. It is possible that you can go back to your job a week after your rhinoplasty. This will depend on your adherence to the post-operative instructions given to you by your surgeon. You are not allowed to hit the gym and lift weights for about two weeks. Rhinoplasty is beneficial not only to those who want to improve their look but also for those who have deviated septum.
