Going Flat to Pointed through Black Rhinoplasty

The African American population is increasingly patronizing nose surgeries with the belief that they have the type of nose that are not ideally beautiful. They resort to the wondrous changes that black rhinoplasty can provide. This is different from the Caucasian nose surgeries in many ways.

Noses of African Americans are wider than those of the Caucasians. The tips of their nose are less defined thus making it look flat. They also have thicker skin than Caucasians. These should be taken into consideration when undergoing a nose surgical procedure. You have to pick a surgeon that has an experience in handling patients under the mentioned characteristics.

African American rhinoplasty patients usually request to undergo rhinoplasty to have a narrower nose. They also want an increase in the projection of the tips of their nose. To attain this, the surgeon gently fractures the nasal bones and sets their new structure. An implant can be placed on the tip of their nose to make it look pointed. Tissues from the patient’s ear or inner nose can be used for the implant. If this is not possible, silicon can be the next resort.

It has been also noted that African American patients want to straighten their nose. This is done by filing your nasal cartilage after opening it up. Sometimes, if it is necessary, some of the cartilage is trimmed.

African Americans are more prone to scarring and keloid formation. This is discussed with you by your surgeon before undergoing the surgery so that dissatisfaction will be prevented. Non- Caucasian patients are mostly hard up in adjusting with their new appearance after the nose job. If you picked a surgeon that has not yet experienced doing a nose surgery to African American patients, there is a great possibility that your nose will look too Western which can lead to loss of identity. This may lead to depression and revision rhinoplasty may be indicated.

Just like any nose surgeries, nasal packing will be kept in place for 24 to 48 hours. Intranasal splints will be placed that will help in the healing process. Follow-up check-up is typically done 2 weeks after the surgery. The final healing of the surgical wound may occur after a year.

In order to prevent too much bleeding, you should follow the post-operative instructions that would be given by your surgeon. You are not to bend over or lift heavy objects. Remember that if you adhere to the instructions, you can go back to work after a week.
