Getting a Nose Job

Getting a nose job seems to be a pretty common event these days.  If you look any any of the popular celebrity magazines, you are likely to see several celebrities who have had nose jobs.  To some people it may seem as regular a thing to do as changing their hair style.  But, for most people in the rest of society, the facts about nose jobs are not very well known and it’s important that you get familiar with all the information about nose jobs before you decide to proceed with nose surgery.

What is a nose job?

Although most people call them nose jobs, the actual term for the surgical procedure is rhinoplasty.  It is also often referred to as nose reshaping.  Ocasionaly a doctor may suggest that a person reshape their nose due to a medical condition.  If, say as example, you have a hard time breathing through your nose, or if there is something blocking the nasal cavities, or even if you have had an accident that left your nose disfigured.  However, the most common reason people get nose jobs is because the want their noses to look better.

The following list displays some common reasons that people use for desiring nose reshaping.

  • Having a nose that is too big or prominent
  • Having a noticeable deformation of the nasal bridge
  • Having a long nose that makes the rest of the profile look awkward
  • Having a nose that is too wide for the face
  • Having too thick of a nasal bridge
  • Having extreme flaring of the nostrils
  • Having a crooked nasal bridge

Frequently we see that aging alters the shape of the nose.  In elderly people, the support structure of the nasal brige begins to lose its firmness and this ends up causing the nose to lose the contour it had to begin with.  The nose can begin to look bulbous or have a noticeable droop at the end.

As technology improves and surgical advances are made, surgeons have more and more options available to them in figuring out how to alter the shape of someone’s nose.  In the pase, nose surgeries were limited to lengthening or shortening the end of the nose.

Different techniques and procedures are necessary in order to have the best nose job results.  Different faces need different strategies to end up more attractive.

Currently, nose jobs are able to end with a very natural looking nose.  Twenty years ago, the after affects of a nose job were very noticeable.

Results of Nose Jobs

The nose surgery usually requires that patient be put under general anesthesia.  A cut is made on the edge of the nostril or on the end of the nose to decrease the size of the nostrils

There is also a technique known as open rhinoplasty that has the surgeon make a cut at the bottom of the nose to make it easier to seperate the tissues from the support structure of the nose.  This technique is usually used in when the bone and cartilage in the nose need to be reshaped.

To make the nose smaller the doctor will purposefully cause a fracture in the nasal bones.  After that, he is able to reset them in a better and more attractive way.  He can put them in a more compact position which will have the affect of making the nose look smaller.

If a patient is actually trying to increase the site of his nose, then the doctor will take cartilage from other parts of the patient’s body.  He will then graft that cartilage on to the nasal structure.  Cartilage can be taken from the nose itself, the hip bone, ribs, or even the ear.  Your surgeon should talk about the options of such procedures before any operation takes place.

In these types of nose jobs, the tissue is grafted and the skin arranges itself around the nasal bones to result in the final and desired shape.

When a nose job is required to improve breathing conditions, the obstruction is taken out of the nasal cavity to open up the airway.  Again their are different precedures to tackle this kind of surgery.  At times the doctor will place a splint to the nasal bridge in order to stop any grafted tissue from creating a block in the nasal cavity.  This will also help to keep the nose safe and uninjured during the procedure.
