What You Should be Aware of Before Cosmetic Rhinoplasty
Just like any kind of surgery, getting a cosmetic rhinoplasty should be researched thoroughly before submitting to it. You should be aware of how it is done and what you can expect when the procedure is over. By having a candid and honest discussion with your surgeon, you would be able to determine whether you are a good candidate for this kind of surgery or not.
Before entrusting yourself to the hands of your surgeon, determine first what you want to alter and how you would want your nose to look like after the surgery. It is very necessary that you define your goals before approaching a competent surgeon. It would help to create a list of your expectations and objectives and show that list to your surgeon when you approach him for consultation.
A knowledgeable surgeon will be blunt with you in discussing the risks and difficulties involved in this kind of surgery. A nose job is a complicated procedure and can result to some serious problems even when all precautions are properly observed. It is best to stay away from surgeons who talks down the difficulty of this procedure.
The age of the person plays a major role in considering a rhinoplasty. Older people have a more difficult time dealing with a new nose. People who are 40 years old and older tend to have more appreciation on the outcome of the surgery, but they often see an entirely different person when they look at themselves in the mirror. It usually takes a few years before they get used to the new look that they have acquired.
If you are already determined to have a rhinoplasty, make sure that you don’t use any nasal medications months before undergoing the surgery. This is because the medication that you are using might get in the way of the healing process. If it can be avoided, tell your surgeon not to put nasal packing in your newly altered nose after the procedure. Packing is not really that important and it can be a great obstacle during the healing period.
To bring more comfort to your nose while waiting for it to heal completely, you can use a humidifier for at least two weeks after your surgery. Nasal saline spray can also moisturize nasal passages so you will not have difficulty breathing through your nose. To reduce the swelling, sleep on thicker pillows or in a recliner so your head is raised. You can also apply ice packs to help ease the puffiness.
You should also know that most nose surgery ends up needing a second rhinoplasty procedure. There will be circumstances that can occur after the surgery that is beyond your control and that of your surgeon’s. It is a risk that you should be aware of before the surgery and you should be willing to deal with it when the need arises.
